Anyhoo...this is the last week of the season for head to head leagues (for most leagues anyway I imagine) and in roto leagues you still may have a category or two to make a move in to pick up some points. Are there any players you can look at that have picked it up lately, or have favorable match ups in the coming weeks that can help you out? Yes. If I said No, this would have been a very short article. All of the ownership percentages that follow come from Yahoo!.
The Baltimore Orioles have been one of the hottest teams in baseball, tying the Yankees for first in the AL East a couple nights ago. A big part of that has been their pitching. Uber-prospect of yesteryear, Zach Britton, has been amazing in the last month, winning 4 straight starts, giving up 3 earned across them and fanning 29. He has a potentially tough match up this weekend against the Yankees, but they have been struggling lately, then after that he has match ups at Oakland, at Boston, and home against Toronto. I actually dropped John Lester for him based on recent performance and end of season match ups, and he is only owned in 17% of leagues. On the offensive side, Mark Reynolds has been amazing the last 30 days going .298/.416/.690 with 10 homers. His upcoming stops at Oakland then Seattle aren't favorable, but he's home for the next week, and will be visiting Boston and Toronto during the playoffs. Owned in less than half of Yahoo! leagues.
The worst team ERA's in baseball belong to Colorado, Cleveland, Minnesota and Houston, in that order. Any match up against one of those teams has to be looked at favorably for the opposition.
The Giants, Diamondbacks and Cubs all make appearances in Coors Field before the season is over. Some lesser owned guys that could help on those squads? Brandon Belt (18% owned), Chris Johnson (22%), Anthony Rizzo (44%), Luis Valbuena (0%)
The Rangers get to tee off from home 13 times over the rest of September, and against the Indians, Mariners and Athletics no less. David Murphy is owned in 35% of leagues and has a .364 avg with 4 HR's and 8 2b's over the last month.
The Nationals play out the rest of their season in pitcher friendly parks with the exception of a 3 game stint in Philly Sept 25th-27th. We all know Strasburg is going to be shut down, and Jordan Zimmerman and Gio Gonzalez are all far from available in leagues and Edwin Jackson has been pitching better than his W-L record suggests. We still Ross Detwiler available in 37% of leagues. His 86K's in 140 innings aren't great, but his 3.15 ERA and 1.15 WHIP are more than serviceable. Reports say that John Lannan is the leading candidate to replace Strasburg. While not my first choice for who I would go after in the free agent pool, he could be worth a play given the right match up.
