Daily Notes | Just When Crawford Returns Ortiz Gets Hurt

Carl Crawford was in the starting lineup for the first time this season and hitting second in a lineup that featured four lefties at the top of the order. One of those lefties was David Ortiz who happened to be hitting behind Crawford in the Red Sox order. The relationship was working pretty well for Crawford who singled in his first at-bat and eventually scored after an Ortiz single moved him to third. In the 8th inning, the Red Sox first four hitters eventually had to face left-hander Leyson Septimo. Both Crawford and Ortiz walked before the fourth lefty in the crew, Adrian Gonzalez, hit a clutch home run (something he desperately needed - and to the opposite field no less). On the play though, Ortiz came up lame running between second and third. Gonzalez made it back to the dugout well before Ortiz as Ortiz was helped immediately by the trainer. Bobby Valentine looked visibly worried.

As it turns out, Ortiz hurt his ankle on the play and it was recently announced that he will have an MRI although Ortiz himself claims that nothing popped, which is good news. Given that the Red Sox have gotten back Crawford and the fourth lefty in the crew, Jacoby Ellsbury, it would be horrible timing for Ortiz to miss any action. Among qualifying hitters, only Andrew McCutchen and Joey Votto have a better OPS than the 36-year-old, but this is the sort of thing that makes you worry about a 36-year-old having a great season. Here are some other notes on injuries to Bautista, Votto, and more:

• Ortiz was not the most valuable player that had an 8th inning injury last night. Jose Bautista had to leave the game for the Blue Jays in the 8th after hurting his wrist on a follow through of a swing. He too will need an MRI, but in worse news he actually heard a popping noise in the wrist. 
• Bautista was not the best player who is going to miss some action in the coming days. Votto will be out close to a month because of knee surgery for an injury that originally took place in late June. 
• Brett Gardner felt sore after playing 3 innings in a rehab game. 
• In happier injury news, Roy Halladay goes tomorrow for the Phillies and Mariano Rivera said his goal is to be back on the mound in September. 
• Mark Trumbo has hit 5 home runs in his last 7 games and has more home runs than anyone since May 25th. Where are all the skeptics that did not believe in him after his walk to strikeout rate last year? 
• Trevor Rosenthal was called up from Double-A to pitch in St. Louis. It's an interesting move as the Cardinals by-passed Shelby Miller for the second time this season. 
• Santiago Casilla has struggled recently in closing duties, so CSN Bay Area explores if any of the available closers on the trade market could be a better fit for the team. 
• After giving up 5 hits and 2 walks in one-third of an inning it is safe to assume that Chris Tillman is back to being Chris Tillman or he's pitching hurt. Either way, it was a nice thought to add him after a great run in the minors, but there's too much to worry about here.
• Salvador Perez hit his 5th home run in just his 17th game yesterday. Perhaps the Royals should move him out of the 9th spot in the batting order.
• Joe Mauer is the 12th highest paid athlete in America. He hit his 6th home run of the season yesterday. Forget moving Salvador Perez in the order, someone get the kid a raise. 
• In a game in which Matt Harvey was pitching for a promotion (though the Mets wouldn't go so far as to admit that), the 23-year-old took a no-hitter into the 6th inning. Harvey has struck out about a hitter per inning in the minor leagues and is someone to excited about in deeper dynasty leagues. Mixed leagues can feel free to stream him given that he gets the Dodgers in start number one. 
• MLB Trade Rumors reports that the Braves are looking to acquire a top of the rotation arm. 
• Drew Storen is very close to returning for the Nationals, but was not sharp in his most recent tune-up. 
• Neftali Feliz appeared healthy in his first rehab outing with the Rangers. He will almost certainly be pitching out of the bullpen when he is activated. 
• John Danks threw from 90 feet for the White Sox yesterday. He will throw again on Tuesday.
