Daily Notes | Bauer to Pitch Thursday?

Written by Mark Schruender on .

Trevor Bauer pitched only 2.2 innings today. There was nothing physically wrong with him. He had 5 strikeouts and gave up 2 hits. Given that he met with the Diamondbacks front office earlier in the week to discuss how he would speak to the media and that Joe Saunders has been placed on the DL, it was pretty obvious that the Diamondbacks were set to call up their best prospect.

Bauer is 11-1 this year with a 2.23 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 42.2 between AA and AAA this season. Even though he has less than 120 innings thrown in the minors between this year and last, many believe he has nothing left to prove in the minor leagues. He should be added in all mixed leagues by the time he takes the mound on Thursday against the Braves.

  • It is official. Kevin Youkilis was traded to the White Sox. It will be interesting to see where he hits in the lineup. It is clear based on what Ken Williams said that Youk has a chip on his shoulder
  • Bauer will make his Major League debut this week while Anthony Rizzo appears set to make his Cubs debut on Tuesday.
  • Kris Medlin could be joining the Braves rotation to take the spot of Randall Delgado or Mike Minor. Both pitchers were terrible in the series against the Red Sox, but maybe that's a tough place to criticize them since they were pitching in Fenway against the team with the second most runs in baseball.
  • Ryan Zimmerman claims that the cortisone shot he received before Sunday's game made a big difference in how his shoulder felt and claims that it is best for him in terms of monitoring long term lingering effects and the chance to stay in the lineup in the short term. He intends to play through his shoulder problems all season.
  • Santiago Casilla blew his first save of the season for the Giants on Sunday. He is now 20 for 21 since stepping into the role of closer.
  • Dustin Ackley is now hitting .219 in the month of June, but Eric Wedge is not worried.
  • Lance Lynn hasn't been able to go 6 innings in his last two starts and has allowed 5 and 6 earned runs respectively in those two starts.
  • Jose Altuve was removed from the Astros game in the fifth inning today with a mild hamstring strain. It doesn't sound like he will need to go on the DL. Bud Norris will be activated soon by the Astros.
  • Frank Francisco was unable to go tonight for the Mets. It's unknown whether or not he'll need to be placed on the DL. Based on a tweet from Buster Olney it appears for the time being the Mets aren't going to be trading for bullpen help. That means that Bobby Parnell is a likely source of saves if Francisco misses significant time.
  • Hanley Ramirez showed a little leadership calling a meeting for the Marlins on Saturday. The Marlins won Sunday.
