Daily Notes - The More Things Change The More They Stay The Same Edition

There are certain things in this world that are constant and will always be true. Cable will always cost too much money. I will always have trouble deciding between fish and chips or a burger when looking at a restaurant menu, and players will always get hurt doing something stupid. Now, nothing has happened recently or of any significance that I am aware of, but I would like to share footage of this Brett Lawrie walk off homer against the Rangers last night. Notice the height achieved on that leap into home plate while coming home. The Canadian Law Man gave me a heart attack upon lift off within 5 ft of home plate with his team surrounding. Have we not learned anything from Kendrys Morales?

  • I dropped the ball yesterday in the Notes by failing to mention Evan Longoria hitting the shelf for 6-8 wees with a partial tear of his left hammy. maybe my reporting of the popular sleeper pick Cory Luebe being slated to miss his start tonight with a sore elbow makes up for it? Plan accordingly.
  • Is Pedro Alvarez finally doing what we thought he would be all along? Last night he hit his 6th HR on the season. In the last week he leading baseball in WAR with a 0.8 mark high lighted by a .385/.429/1.000 line. I'm not saying he can keep it up for the season, but I am saying if you have the roster space (or were an Evan Longoria owner) you may want to ride out this hot streak. Remember Alvarez was the 2nd overall pick in the 2009 draft, so this production is supposed to be the norm.
  • Brian Matsuz earned his first win in his last 12 decisions yesterday by beating the Yankees of all teams. It helps that Phil Hughes was the opposing pitcher on this night, as I'm pretty sure anyone else on that rotation would have given him a run for his money. Of course, being a Mets fan, I hear 12 losses in a row, and think "I would have KILLED for 12 losses in a row when we had Anthony Young on our staff." (I actually think with hyper links in my mind... it's a mystifying thing)
  • Nolan Reimold missed last nights game and will miss tonight's as well with a bulging disk. The Orioles don't think he will have to go on the DL, but in my non-existent medical background I wonder how he can he not end up there? I'm dropping him and picking up the streaking Michael Saunders or Josh Reddick if they are available.

Pitching Match ups

TEX @ TOR - Harrison vs. Romero

KC @ DET - Sanchez vs. Verlander

NYM @ HOU - Schwinden vs. Rodriguez - Schwinden wasn't horrible (with the exception of 1 inning) in his only other start this year, but Hou has been fighting the last few games.

LAD @ COL - Kershaw vs. Pomeranz - Pomeranz hasn't shown us that he should be played in the fake game yet.

MIL @ SD - Gallardo vs. Suppan - Despite struggles, you have to start Gallardo.

ARI @ WAS - Saunders vs. Jackson - Neither guy will likely post numbers to amaze, but they should put up numbers that are servicable.

BAL @ NYY - Arrieta vs. Nova - Nova has been solid all year.

CHC @ CIN - Samardzija vs. Arroyo - rained out last night, still taking Arroyo tonight.

OAK @ BOS - McCarthy vs. Bard - Bard owns the A's. Play him and don't look back.

PHI @ ATL - Halladay vs. Hanson

SEA @ TB - Beaven vs. Shields - I'd roll with both here. TB isn't as scary without Longo, and beaven has had excellent control this year, walking only two.

CLE @ CHW - Tomlin vs. Humber - I wouldn't start either.

PIT @ STL - Burnett vs. Lynn - You've got to start both tonight.

MIN @ LAA - Hendriks vs. Weaver -

MIA @ SF - Zambrano vs. Zito - Zambrano hasn't been horrible so far. Good play if he can minimize walks tonight.
