I had no idea that Derek Jeter was batting .420 as of April 25th. I didn't now who Michael Saunders was or that Jake Peavy was back.
So after a lot of reading to catch up on things, I'm back too... with lots of coffee.
- Last night in the pitcher's paradise known as Petco Park, Ryan Braun reminded everyone who the reigning MVP was, going 4-for-5 with 3 HR's and a triple generating 6 RBI's. In that one game he doubled his home run and RBI totals on the season.
- Matt Kemp reminded everyone who the MVP should have been by hitting his 12th HR of the year. While pacing and projecting is fool's gold, it's fun none the less. In 2010 when Jose Bautista hit 54 HR's, he had only 4 in April. When Barry Bonds hit 73 HR's in 2001, he hit 11 in April. In 2001 Mark McGwire had 10 April HR's (1 in March) and then 5 April HR's in 1999. Kemp has history in his grasp if he can avoid a prolonged slump or two.
- Mike Aviles is surpassing everyone's expectations so far this year. He added another HR and 4 RBI's last night. He is absolutely tearing up the lead off spot in Boston. His triple slash is .291/.330/.535. He has 5 HR's, 18 Runs and 17 RBI to go along with 3 steals. He is currently the 11th ranked player in Yahoo! leagues.
- Yu Darvish seems to be the ace we thought he was, up to 4-0 on the year with a 2.18 ERA. He struck out 9 Blue Jays last night while giving up 1 earned in 7 innings. Is asking him to cut down on his BB/9 nit-picing?
Pitching Match ups
ARI @ WAS - Cahill vs. Zimmerman - Cahill seems like a safe play here given Werth missing action and Zimmerman on the DL the Nats will have problems scoring runs. Bryce Harper isn't the solution to offense struggles yet.
BAL @ NYY - Matsuz vs. Hughes - You can't possibly consider starting either of these guys right now. I would put money on a relief pitcher getting the win in this one.
KC @ DET - Hochevar vs. Porcello - Porcello hasn't been very good his last two outings and KC could either flop or blow up against him. I'll err on the side of caution.
TEX @ TOR - Feliz vs. Hutchinson - TOR is struggling for the most part, Feliz seems like a safe play here.
CHC @ CIN -Samardzija vs. Arroyo - Very early still, but Samardzija has been horrible on the road (10.38 ERA, 2.77 WHIP) compared to home (0.59 ERA, 0.65 WHIP).
OAK @ BOS - Parker vs. Doubront - Parker is a top notch prospect, but Boston has been good lately. I wouldn't pitch him here.
PHI @ ATL - Hamels vs. Beachy - As if he need me to tell you what to do here.
SEA @ TB - Noesi vs. Moore - Noesi needs to show me more before I would play him against the Rays.
NYM @ HOU - Niese vs. Happ - All of Niese's outings this year have been quality starts, and this should be no different.
CLE @ CHW - Jimenez vs. Sale - You can start em both, though I like Sale a lot more than Ubaldo.
PIT @ STL - Morton vs. Wainwright - This matchup is screaming for Wainwright to hit double digit strike outs.
LAD @ COL - Lilly vs. Chacin - Chacin hasn't found it yet this year. With the Dodgers as hot as they have been, he can ride pine if he is on my roster.
MIL @ SD - Marcum vs. Volquez - Both players get a green light.
MIN @ LAA - Liriano @ Williams - The spring was a fluke. We can all go back to ignoring Liriano. I would gamble on Williams off a strong start against the Rays here facing the Twins.
MIA @ SF - Nolasco @ Cain - Nolasco is a must start in this match up. He owns AT&T Park to the tune of a 3-0 record and 0.76 ERA there.
