MLB Trade Rumors posted this morning that the Yankees have signed former Dodgers' catcher Russell Martin. The deal is pending a physical.
This deal doesn't do much for the fantasy impact of Martin, though he may score a few more runs in that lineup. However, it has huge implications for top prospect Jesus Montero, whom I had projected to have a fine rookie season. When it was announced that Jorge Posada would be the Yankees' primary DH for 2011, I wrote that Montero could be an impact bat right away, especially with the lack of depth at catcher. I also mentioned that his defense has been highly criticized by scouts. Apparently, the Yankees want to see him improve upon that aspect of his game before handing him a big-league job.
